Free File Hosting
May 15, 2007
Yesterday was meltdown day. I had 250MBs worth of files that I needed to transfer from my Apple Powerbook into a Samsung mobile phone that didn’t have Bluetooth capabilities. The USB cable provided by Samsung would have been useful if the software that it came with had support for Mac OS X. Alas, Samsung has yet to realise that Apple is gaining ground in the computer market and they need to make their products compatible with both Windows and Mac platforms.
I knew there was a way to transfer those files but I was out of time and mostly out of patience. I ended up copying the files into a flash drive, loading it into my Windows desktop and did a USB transfer from there.
What I really needed yesterday is what I found today. The cell phone file upload service by http://www.go-wap.com allows file transfers to any mobile phone without the use of USB cables, infrared or Bluetooth. The transfer is facilitated by their upload tool which in turn sends the files to the chosen mobile phone via the phone browser. Simple, uncomplicated, efficient. The upload/download service is free but any WAP charges incurred are between you and your mobile provider.
So the next time my friend emails me again a whole gamut of Françoise Hardy ringtones, Hello Kitty wallpapers or some clips from U2 concerts, the more logical mode of transfer is uploading and downloading without cables.
